Summer Science Exhibits on Tour at Manchester Science Festival

Exciting exhibits from the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition will be showcasing their ground-breaking research at this year's Manchester Science Festival held at the Science and Industry Museum.

A handpicked selection of exhibits from the Royal Society’s Summer Science Exhibitions will be appearing at Manchester Science Festival as one of its stops of the inaugural Summer Science Exhibits on Tour programme.

Hear, see, and smell changes in volcanos as the Curating Crises Team explores one of nature’s most extreme phenomena. Visitors can also burn off energy in a game of ‘The Floor is Magma!’ and handle specimens of genuine volcanic rock. Discover a different kind of rock with the Clem Burke Drumming Project’s ‘Drumming for Health’ activity, which will tap into the physical and mental health benefits of rock drumming.

Sensing Volcanoes (Universities of Oxford, East Anglia and Manchester, and the West Indies)

What if you shared a postcode with a volcano? Meet the teams studying the sights, smells, sensations and sounds of past eruptions to understand when another might be imminent – and mitigate its impact. Visitors can hear seismic shifts and smell the scents of an active Caribbean volcano, then play the game, ‘The Floor is Magma!’, to test their decision-making skills.

Drumming For Health (Universities of Chichester, Exeter, Hatpury, and KCL)

Can you drum your way to a healthier life? Your feet might thump to the beat of the music during a run, but drumming yourself fit could be another way to workout, according to research. Meet professional drummers and pick up the sticks yourself while watching your heart rate and oxygen levels respond.
