Exhibit: Mirror Moon - artwork display by Luke Jerram

02 - 07 July 2024 18:00 - 18:00 The Royal Society Free

This event is part of the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition 2024.

The moon, acting as a cultural mirror to society, has long inspired humanity, reflecting the ideas and beliefs of people around the world. Throughout history, the moon has served as a muse for artists, poets, scientists, writers, and musicians worldwide.

Made from stainless steel and utilising NASA's accurate topographic data of the moon's surface, Mirror Moon allows the public to feel and touch every crater, valley and mountain. Luke Jerram’s artwork not only offers a visual exploration of the moon but also provides an immersive experience accessible to those who are visually impaired.

This artwork will be exhibited for the first time in London at the Royal Society, during the Summer Science Exhibition. Luke Jerram will present an artist talk on Sunday 7 July

Luke Jerram creates artworks at all scales, that deliver messages and inspire communities to recognise often challenging concepts. With many of his latest artworks, including Gaia, Oil Fountain, Inhale and This Way Forward, Jerram has been using his skills in visual communication to draw attention to planetary health.

Many of his artworks combine arts, science and engineering. His artwork Museum of the Moon is one of Luke’s most successful touring projects and has been presented in different ways, more than 300 times in 30 different countries. Over 2 million people visited the artwork when it was presented at the Natural History Museum, making it one of their most popular exhibits ever.
