Talk: Learning about cosmological systems in the lab: philosophical questions

This event is part of the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition 2024. 

Many cosmological systems – such as black holes or events in the early universe – are inaccessible experimentally. However, we can create concrete models in the lab that replicate some of the behaviour of these systems. In this talk, Dr Lina Jansson will discuss the philosophical questions that arise when we use one system to try to understand a different system. How is it possible to understand one system better by studying a different one?

Dr Lina Jansson is Associate Professor working in the Philosophy Department at the University of Nottingham. Her main research interest has centred around questions that have to do with the nature of explanation. She is the recipient of the 2023 APEX Award.

This talk will be held in the Kohn Centre on Saturday 6 July 2024, 3.30pm - 4pm.
