Activity: The Science of Sound

This event is part of the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition 2024.

The Red House, former home of famous composer Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), is now home to an award-winning education programme, connecting young people with music and heritage in engaging and innovative ways. 

Hearing is one of our most important senses, necessary for basic communication, speech, and awareness. We also use it to create and listen to music. Join us and explore a selection of experiments that were developed for our primary school Science of Sound programme; from the magical images created by a Chladni plate, to using a Theremin to create music and sound using light and movement. Take on the role of scientific investigators and find out all about sound; how it is formed, travels and is heard through our ears.  

The Red House Museum has been funded through the Places of science grant scheme.   

Attending the event

This drop-in activity will be held in the City of London Room 1 on Sunday 7 July 2024, 10am — 4pm. 

• Free to attend, no ticket required
• Due to limited capacity, there may be times when queuing is necessary for a short period. Please note that we operate on a first-come, first-served basis
• This activity will take place in person at the Royal Society
